HISTORY SECTION Offside was introduced around the turn of the century (1902?) because prior to that forwards just stood on or around the goal-line markings (then two arcs of a circle around the goal-line like the letter B without the closing middle line - before the introduction of the six yard and eighteen yard boxes and penalty kicks) waiting for the ball to be whacked in and hoping to score in the ensuing melee - hardly conducive to skilful football (I wonder what inspired Wimbledon?). It was during this phase that the expression "goal poacher" came in to vogue. Originally, you needed three opposing players goalside of the forward (i.e. two defenders and the goalie) but this went to the other extreme and made goal scoring too difficult with the development of offside traps. This was reduced to the current two opponents in 1925. In the first season (1925-26), total goals scored went from 4,000 to 6,500. I'm sure you know that the originator and first president of the football league (in 1888) was a Scotsman from Perthshire, William McGregor, who moved to the Aston area of Birmingham to operate a drapers shop. Surprise, surprise, Aston Villa were one of the twelve original teams in the inaurgural season. I'm sure you will be riveted by this vital information. |

Home of the Blues Brothers The more you practice, the luckier you get. (Jonny Wilkinson, England's rugby union captain) Just the party left now - December 5th. Have a great thanksgiving. G END OF SEASON: Saturday 20th Lost 3-1 In a reprise of last weeks' game, the BBs rematched the Hornets and gave them a good run for their money. A riotous party the night before nevertheless found the team looking sharp: as usual we applied a ton of pressure but had nothing to show for it after a very good first half where we found ourselves 1-0 down due to a breakaway goal. It might have been 2 thanks to a stupendous save by Emmanuel at point blank range. We kept battling on and Kevin sent in a lovely ball from 20 yards to Cole to backhead and equalise with only 5 minutes remaining. Now was not the time for soft goals but we suddenly contrived to give 2 away instead of hanging on for extra time and that was that. Cole, Joey, Winston and Brian took KitKats for Man of the Match. Out great keepers Emmanuel and Sebastian with nice touches as centre forwards: Kevin everywhere as sweeper, Suraj and Cameron as tireless backs, Freddie, Cole, Joey, Brian and Winston tightening the vice in midfield, Bami and Chris wonder wingers and Karl-Erik as forward in every position. Final: Sebastian 4: Cole 4: Bami 3: Karl-Erik 3: Joey 1: Kevin 1 last photo is Cole's goal

Hornets 12.30AM 13nov04 Lost 0-2: Last league game of the season and we hoped to go out with a bang but we were the ones mugged by the Hornets in a strong display as we could make little headway against a strong defence and midfield, though we tried very hard. The Hornets scored 2 good goals, one from a cross and in the last quarter one from 20 yards, and our defence did well to keep them from having too many chances. We mixed up the positions but will go back to the old ways for the play-offs. Everyone had flashes of brilliance, Bami's 4th quarter, Karl-Erik denied a certain goal by the save of the century, Winston winkling the ball free on the goal line, Brian saving the day on countless occasions, Suraj another very solid performance, good keeping by Sebastian and Emmanuel and hard work by Chris, Brandon, Cole and Freddie. Still we would not find that elusive goal, but the touch will come. Men of the match: Suraj and Joey. Cumulative: Sebastian 4: Bami 3: Cole 3: Karl-Erik 3: Joey 1: Kevin 1
Game Report v. BLUE CRUSH 12.30AM 6nov04 Lost 0-1: Report by Coach Jens as last remaining coach Men of the Match: Freddie and Cole Sorry guys we played a great game but lost in the final few minutes when the Blue crush scored a lucky goal. We got quite a scare when within 10 seconds of the kickoff, the blue crush appeared to have scored. An off side penalty called the goal back but the whole affair seemed to spur the Brothers on. We started attacking the ball and moving forward. We played 3 and 3/4 periods of great soccer. Always ready to attack and always ready for a Blue crush fast break. Brandon played a very aggressive game winning the ball by getting to it first. Suraj and Cameron and Joey where solid in defense. We really appreciate their consistency and efforts. Brian had some very aggressive saves in defense. Cole, Kevin and Freddie did an excellent job clogging the middle on any breakaways. Again we had opportunities but just couldn't get the ball into the net. Chris was very strong at forward with some great crosses. Karl-Erik, Bami, Sebastian, and Emmanuel and Joey (Yes, you read right) did everything they could but just didn't get any breaks. As usual Emmanuel and Sebastian played excellent in goal and kept us in the game. On the darker side, the game was a very physical game with a lot of trash talking going on. There was a lot of pushing and shoving, on both sides. I was very proud of our boys for keeping their composure. We did seem to get frustrated at times and it affected our play. With the score still tied, the play got very rough towards the end with a very aggressive foul on Bami. I was very surprised when a red card was not displayed. Luckily Bami was not hurt. Sometimes there is a fine line between aggressive play and dirty play. I think may of us on the sideline saw some very dirty plays by the Blue Crush throughout the game. Thank you to Johnson for your help and support. Thanks to all the parents for your support during a very frustrating and exciting game.
Game Report v. GREEN TEAM 9AM 30oct04 Tied 1-1: At last a real game and one which we should have won but contrived to tie (translation = draw), coming back from a goal down. Men of the Match: Kevin and Karl-Erik. Goals: At last a real game and one which we should have won but contrived to draw. We did dominate the GT but not entirely - slick passing and determined play plus some good goalkeeping frustrated us, and we gave up the first goal on a breakaway nicely coverted. But the team responded quickly and Karl-Erik's determination paid off as he won a tussle with the goalie to force the ball in the near corner. Victory seemed ours for the taking but despite constant raids led by Chris and Bami on the wings, we could not find the net. Our midfield had to battle for control and Kevin chased down many GT forays. Emmanuel and Sebastian had a quiet time in goal, just a couple of excitements: stout defenders Suraj, Brian, Kevin, Joey : Midfield wizards Cameron, Cole, Winston, Freddie, Brandon, F/w Bami Chris Karl Erik . Men of the Match Chris and Kevin. Goals Karl-Erik 1: Cumulative: Sebastian 4: Bami 3: Cole 3: Karl-Erik 3: Joey 1: Kevin 1
Game Report v. Titans 2pm 23oct04 W 4-0: What a day, shake the goal jar: Man U beat Arsenal, Brighton beat Leeds and, on a perfect afternoon and in a carbon copy of last week's game, the BBs cut down the understrength but valiant Titans. We raced to a four goal lead by half time. Again frustratingly we had to apply the Mercy Rule brakes, and played for the shut out in the second half. A strong midfield of Cole, Kevin, Freddie and Winston kept the ball in the Titan's half for 80% of the game, controlling, passing, spreading, and enabling a constant barrage with Karl-Erik and Chris storming through on the wings: Sebastian made 2 solid goals on assists from Chris and went close with shots just over the bar and past the post. Cole drove right through the center and calmly placed the ball past the goalie, amd Kevin finished off the half with a searing 20 yard drive low into the far corner. The second half saw Bami, Brandon and Emmanuel on the attack, frequently going close but unable to find the decisive touch. Sebastian in goal touched the ball once. Suraj had another impressive game at right back and Chris switched from attack to defence with complete assurance, earning his MOM stripe. Greatest excitements: Bami's bloody lip in Q1: Joey's high-speed ride from Valmonte to make the second quarter: Dr Leesment's cheering to take the Parent of the Match : and the Banana Bread. Men of the Match: Sebastian and Chris. Goals: Sebastian 2: Cole 1: Kevin 1: Cumulative: Sebastian 4: Bami 3: Cole 3: Karl-Erik 2: Joey 1: Kevin 1 Game Report v.Green Beans 12.30pm 16oct04 W 4-0: We rescued Mrs Bami and the goal jar (plus Coach G) from a profound decline by topping, tailing and steaming the Green Beans and eating them for lunch, with maximum points for 3 goals, a win and a shutout. With a new 3-4-3 attacking lineup, the BBs stared uphill and put on a dazzling display of aggression and control, stringing together 3, 4 and 5 passes at a time. Freddie and Cole imposed a vice on the midfield and so the goals just popped in: Chris’s 20 yard through ball was touched on by Karl-Erik to set up Cole to whack it in the corner: Karl-Erik’s cross found Sebastian who made no mistake from 5 yards: Brian made a lovely high pass on the wing for Bami to run through the defence and score at the near post: Freddie whipped the ball in from 35 yards to Joey on the penalty spot, who controlled, turned and shot (just like Michael Owen). One breakaway goal and the others through teamwork in front of goal - nice. That was just half time: the reshuffle upset our rhythm and the Beans got more into the game, but we still dominated: by 4Q we pulled right back and let our defenders have a go up front (which demonstrated how useless our attackers are at defence). Emmanuel had little to do in the first half in goal, but Sebastian saved our shutout on some close calls in Q4: Kevin stormed to the rescue on countless occasions with able support from Cameron and Suraj (though we will face stronger attacks): Brandon ran and ran, Winston continued to sparkle and Chris was a revelation up front. Men of Match Brian and Cameron. Goals: Bami 1: Cole 1: Sebastian 1: Joey 1: Cumulative: Bami 3: Cole 2: Sebastian 2: Karl-Erik 2: Joey 1Game Report v.Kiwis 9am 9oct04 L 4-0: The BBs were beaten in the mist by the Kiwis whose attack was sharp to the point of being almost irresistible. We only seeped one goal per quarter thanks to stout defending led by Joey and Kevin, but we did not really win the midfield battle and although we went close to scoring through Winston, Karl-Erik and Bami in particular, we could not convert our chances. We started fighting harder for the ball and put together some phases of play worthy of Brighton & Hove Albion at their best, lovely passing and moving of the ball up field, and everyone had moments of glory, but we also started to run out of gas playing uphill in Q4. Men of the Match: Emmanuel for a fantastic goalie performance with some fierce saves: and Winston for an inspired performance at right half. Game 3 2oct04 2pm Blizzards 0 Blues Brothers 0 Fratres: In a curious link to the King of the Hill u/12/14 2003 finals, both winning coaches faced off with the ref from the u14 losers. In a good-hearted match, not being biased of course but I thought the BBs were unlucky not to win since they won the midfield battle and gave few chances away, and put a lot of pressure on the Blizzards (who were missing a star) without sadly managing to get the ball into the net: trying to get past a saturated defence with good goalies is not easy. But the passing game which has begun to emerge was a joy to behold, with everyone making a good contribution. Sebastian and Emmanual were completely solid in goal and also not bad as forwards (yes dear readers we have to rotate our players): Joey and Brandon were great at back and Kevin our inspired left back (or was it left wing/centre half/striker) had a monster game and also made a couple of decisive tackles to save our bacon. Brian made a series of dazzling Teddy Sheringham touches: Cameron and Suraj really got stuck in tackling and moving the ball upfield. Freddie and Cole were as usual brilliant in midfield in the 2 qs they can play together: and Winston, Chris, Karl Erik and Bami turned in some nice moves: so many players got close to scoring but no one could smack it in. Theme for next week's practice! Plus how to squash a Kiwi. Man of Match - Suraj - for an inspired defensive display. Fratres: 25th Sept 04 9am Ladera Linda: a good scrimmage today against the Hornets. We borrowed Daniel Lee who took the place of Cole very appropriately: we were still a bit ragged in midfield and all over the place in positions, but the aggressive pursuit of the ball was to be seen from various players who improved immensely, such as Emmanuel, and some good phases of passing and moving the ball. He and Sebastian scored and also kept a clean sheet in goal for a 2-0 win. We swapped positions around and had some nice surprises such as Winston's throw-ins and Suraj's determined working of the ball upfield as right wing. nice work and thanks for coming. Game 2 18Sept04 9am Blues Brothers 5 The Slime 3 Coach G was there only for the first quarter and we were 2-1 down, Sebastian having pounced for his first goal, due to his absence we then proceeded to win. The Blues Brothers seem to be finding their way to attack and control the ball. It came together in the 3rd and 4th quarters of game 2. Beginning with a searing attack by Bami, they Slime's defense could not keep up. Cole never quit pressing the ball forward aided by Kevin. The combination of Chris to Bami to Karl Erik was superb. Passing was great especially by Winston and Freddie. Suraj played a great defensive game, especially in the first quarter when we were down 3-1 and trying to gain some control of the game. Joey and Brandon had solid stopping power along with Brian. Sebastian, as always, was top notch as goalie. Man of the Match was Bami who was awesome in the left wing position. Goals: Bami 2: Cole 1: Sebastian 1: Karl-Erik 1 MOM Bami On a super-hot and humid afternoon, although we lost 0-2 to the Foo Fighters, we put up quite a good show. Everyone played with determination and although we made lots of mistakes including worthy condenders for Best Pass to Other Team and Worst Throw-In, we always recuperated and kept well in the game until sunk in the last quarter by a rather splendid goal. Sebastian did a really solid job in goal and was stranded by the defence in the first goal: our midfield could never quite get a grip on the game and our forwards kept running up against a formidable defensive wall: but we kept plugging away and did manage some good attempts: a volley by Freddie, a delightful cross-goal pass by Kevin which Karl-Erik almost latched onto and other too numerous to mention (i.e. I have forgotten). Man of the Match was Brandon for a gritty display at the back. Best Pass to Other Team: Player X's stupendous cross-goal pass from our left wing to the FF’s left wing’s feet on the edge of the penalty area, who was so surprised that he completely missed his chance. MOM Brandon We had a most pleasant opening party on Friday and also a great beach practice on Sunday.
